Action Camp to Start September 6

A direct action forest defense base camp will be taking place September 6th-10th. The location will probably be somewhere in Humboldt Redwoods State Park. Non-Violence, Solidarity, Backwoods and Climbing trainings will be offered. The camp is free, but donations are needed and appreciated. The focus of the camp is to prepare activists to be effective in non-violent forms of direct action, and to support the tree-sits in Fern Gully and Nanning Creek. We are brought together with the common goal of preventing old-growth logging, clear cutting, the use of herbicides and non-sustainable forestry in all areas of the region, the nation and the planet. For more information please call 707-834-3100 or 949-274-0998 or 707-845-9046 or email spooner@spoonerdirect.org.

I find it irresponsible for you to conduct your training in the PARK. What gives you the right to violate the statutes of the PARK? Your very actions may harm or harass species in the forest not to mention damage to the plants around the trees and the tree itself. Yeah, I understand your climbing techniques do not harms, but the PARK is supposed to be pristine, and I find it alarming a group such as your’s would take that law into it’s own hands in determining what is right or wrong for the PARK!

We have been having camps in the park for many years, and we abide by all park rules. Some of the trainings are held outside of the park.We have a right to use the public campgrounds like anyone else and work with the rangers to minimize our impact.

Utilizing the trees as your personal playground does not abide by PARK rules. Sorry, buddy, but I would love to talk to the Ranger in charge. I wil call the Eureka Office to confirm.

Who said we use park trees as a playground? You don't seem to have any clue as to what we do. We gather to share information and that is what must bother you. How does sitting and talking about non-violence hurt the trees? Are we allowed to breathe if we don't agree with you on every issue?

I guess there will be no climbing???? Anywhere.

For clarification. Camping and sharing is cool as long as it is in the campground and not outside designated areas.

The first parts of our climbing trainings don't require a tree at all. First the trainer shows the trainees the climbing gear, shows them how to put the harness on, and explains the principles of safe climbing. Then some time is spent teaching how to tie the various knots that are used by climbers. We feel that it is very important that activist learn some of these things before they go out to the tree-sits and climb. Safety is a major concern of ours. Pacific Lumber Co. is the largest private landowner in Humboldt County and most of their holdings are in Southern Humboldt where the State Parks are located. Much of the park land is adjacent to PL property. Climbing by activists does less damage to the trees than PL's clear-cutting,road-building and herbiciding.

I think that if people uses forest as said by park rules (and ecological rules), nothing will hurt the forest.
Just follow the rules and we will be able to uses the forest for a long time.

Your originality leave much to be desired.

Please remember my very first post on Google. I said that you had kicked the hornets nest and that you would need to "climb them while you have them" on PALCO's lands. There are a lot of old growth and not enough tree sitters. What will you do? Seriously!

MD- We didn't kick a darn thing.

Maxxam's Pacific Lumber has been wiping out ancient redwood forests for the past 20+ years. This is nothing new but is nearing an end. If you have done as much reserach as you claim you would know that your statement lacks accuracy, credibility and relevancy to name a few.

I can give rides out to the camp today at 3 pm sharp from Muddy Waters. I have a little room.

Originality, huh #86.

Anyway. Do you honestly think PALCO is logging old growth every year for the past 20 years? Where is that old growth milling they had we used to go tour. Not the new one. Even as you guys state here the mill cannot handle it. They who is milling the wood? I think you would have a serious beef with the guys still milling the giant logs. Why? Well they still have the machinery for it, which means they are also buying oversized logs from other people therefore making a market. If no one mills them then there is no reason to cut them!

So, where do those logs go? You say they are over 8 feet and 'sponner' is 14 feet. Where would they go? I can tell you if you want to know. I have tracked the sales. Oh that’s right you want to fit the symptom of your problem not the actual source. If PALCO cuts these large logs and sells them, you are only fighting the symptom. The mill is the source of the money to log these trees. Have you tried that? No, I didn’t think so. I check into that also. I know I know its all about PALCO.
