E.P.I.C. Membership Meets in Arcata

The Environmental Protection Information Center (E.P.I.C.) held an open house and membership meeting tonight at their office in Arcata. Staff members informed the participants about the work they have been doing, and the membership elected the 2013 Board of Directors. Music was provided by Josephine Johnson.

Who Bombed Judi Bari Shown at HSU

Arcata,California- Darryl Cherney brought his new documentary film, Who Bombed Judi Bari?, to Humboldt State University tonight, with a screening in the Goodwin Forum. The event was sponsored by the HSU chapter of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws. Darryl and Judi were part of the 1980's movement to save the last 5% of the remaining Old Growth Redwood forests, but there non-violent activism was met with violence. Who Bombed Judi Bari? tells the story of the events surrounding May 24, 1990, when a bomb detonated in the car Judi and Darryl were driving and the subsequent legal battles with the FBI and Oakland Police to clear their names of terrorism charges.

Tree Sit in Trinidad Continues

Trinidad, California- Community supporters brought tofurky, potatoes, and pumpkin pie to the tree sitters on Green Diamond property in Trinidad. The tree sit is on the trail to Strawberry Rock and has been occupied for a little over one year. The timber company plans to clear-cut the area. Here are some links for more information:

What: A gathering of radical Earth lovers to train, share skills, strategize, have fun and bring attention to ongoing clear-cutting and old-growth logging. Events and workshops will include (but not limited to): Non-violent Direct Action, Basic and Intermediate Tree Climbing, Road Blockading, Hiking, Campfire revelry, Banner Painting, (Add your workshop here).

When: August 2nd to the 6th.

Where: 1 hour east of Arcata. See directions. Rideshares are being organized.

Why: Timber companies continue to clear-cut the forest at a rapid pace and rare old-growth forests are under threat of industrial logging this summer in places like the Mattole River, Redwood Creek and South Fork Mountain. These practices are being green-washed by groups like Sustainable Forestry Initiative and Forest Stewardship Council. Their logos attract buyers who want to avoid harming the environment, but mask the reality of clear-cutting and old-growth logging on the ground. The companies and their certifiers need to be held accountable for their acts.

What to bring: Tent or tarp, sleeping bag, large backpack, sunscreen, comfortable footwear, a cup and dish. The weather will be fairly warm, but rain gear is still advised. Also bring contributions of food or cash for the kitchen and snacks or trail food for yourself.

The archival footage brings the story to life, driven by music from the Earth First! movement. Story threads and character arcs intertwine: the lawsuit against the FBI, the complex history of Earth First!, the loggers, the controversy of tree spiking, the political/romantic partnership of Judi and Darryl, and the fate of the ancient redwoods.

Celebration to Honor Richardson Grove

Yesterday, a group of people gathered at Richardson Grove State Park to honor the trees there. The celebration included speakers and music performed by Humboldt Bandemonium, a community driven music ensemble. Among the speakers was Yurok tribal member,
Jene McCovey.

Protesters Block Logging Roads in Oregon

Tuesday, July 26th, Coos County , Oregon

Early Tuesday morning a number of activists with Cascadia Forest Defenders, and Cascadia Earth First! unfolded a series of road blockades in the Elliott State Forest, located in Coos County, closing access points to timber sales along the west fork of the Millicoma River. The blockades consist of an array of Tree-sits and ground level locking devices. The activists are prepared to block logging in this sensitive eco-system for as long as necessary.

The sales are all slated for clear-cut logging, and are areas of native forest that have never before seen a chain saw. They exist on steep slopes where erosion from logging threatens to further damage Salmon habitat, as well as devastate already dwindling numbers of protected species such as the Marbled Murrelet and the Northern Spotted Owl. Native forests refers to forest that has never before been logged, but can include forests that have experienced wildfire.
